Cuban Basil Cuban Basil is a delicious spicy form of basil that will surprise you. The flavor is very similar to sweet basil but the leaves are smaller and have a little extra flavor. Leaves are small like lime basil and the plants only grow to about 1' tall. This basil is perennial but still sensitive to cold weather so it must be brought indoors in the winter. Easy to grow and never needs flowers pinched off because it doesn't grow any. Great in pots because of it's small size. To grow Cuban Basil, you must take cuttings from an existing plant, there are no seeds for this plant. It must get at least 2-3 hours of sunlight a day. It can be grown with filtered light such as under a tree or in a bright window indoors. If it gets too hot, dry or if it becomes pot bound the plant will not grow well. It is important to keep the soil moist and somewhat cool in a medium sized pot or in the ground. This particular basil will last much longer than other basils. When it starts to look woody and doesn't produce many leaves, it is easy to take cuttings to begin a new plant. To harvest Cuban Basil, cut off the top one third of the branches at the next intersection with more leaves growing. This will allow the new leaves to begin growing and become your next harvest. Never harvest more than one third of any herb plant so that it can recover from the pruning.
