Our bean plants are in large 4.5" pots and are seeded with 3-4 seeds per pot. They can be planted in a clump in the ground or a container without separating them. Each plant will produce several handfuls of beautiful tasty beans throughout the season.
Allow at least 12 inches in diameter per plant. These are Pole type beans will grow and fruit continuously throughout the season but need some kind of fencing or poles to grow on. Many people use ladder type supports or a series of bamboo poles bound together at the top and then plant beans at the base of each pole. Keep in mind that pole beans can grow 10-12 feet tall so give them plenty of height to grow on.
Always water low to the ground once or twice a week and never use sprinklers to water your vegetable garden. Beans have shallow roots so using mulch on top of the soil can help hold moisture in and keep weeds down. Beans are ready to harvest about 2 weeks after they bloom and pole beans will continue producing for up to 2-3 months. Pick frequently to prevent beans from getting too big and starchy. Eat them as quickly as possible, or can them or freeze them immediately after picking.
